Board of Supervisors election
As a resident of Picture Rocks, I want to explain why we need Jennifer Allen on our Board of Supervisors, representing District 3. This District is massive and encompasses a very large rural area of Pima County. It also veers into central Tucson so it is very diverse.
Jennifer Allen has the significant experience managing large organizations and budgets that our county needs. She has proven time and again to work collaboratively with others to come up with satisfactory solutions to major problems. She has well-thought-out excellent ideas for how to lower homelessness, fight climate change, protect our water supply and support rural communities, something that has been lacking on our Board of Supervisors. Her commitment to the well-being and managed growth of Pima County is unquestionable. I know this because she has visited Picture Rocks many times and listened to us about our concerns. Vote for Jen!

Epitome of hypocrisy
Republicans calling Democrats liars is the epitome of hypocrisy.
Democrats’ unfulfilled promises are not lies.
Republicans in Congress do whatever Trump, the Liar-in-Chief, tells them to do. They thwart Democrats’ agenda instead of working to solve problems. Then they use taxpayers’ money to give huge tax refunds to big business and the wealthy instead of acting in the best interests of the country as a whole.
If the President takes executive action to fulfill promises, the Republican Supreme Court quashes the President’s efforts.
To solve problems, we must stop the criminal candidate and his MAGA supporters. Vote for Democrats so the President and Congress can work together to fulfill Democratic promises to:
- Preserve the right to abortion;
- Decrease the cost of health care and child care;
- Forgive student loans,
- Implement real immigration reform, and
- Address the devastating effects of global warming.

Trumplicans, not Republicans
GOP Republicans saved our democracy in 2020 by following the law. On January 6th Mike Pence did his duty as vice-president and counted legitimate electors.
Republicans work for law and order. Trumplicans planned January 6th. Republicans are conservative. Trumplicans admire Putin, a communist dictator. Republicans support our Constitution. Trumplicans pledge loyalty to only Trump. Republicans want governments to mind their own business. Trumplicans want to control our bodies, books and ballots. They want authority and leave others with the responsibility.
Millions are giving thousands to a billionaire, really? How’s that work? Which is more likely, millions of people lying about one man or one man lying to millions of people? Supporting a consistent liar is like staying married to a cheating spouse and expecting a change.

Why Harris has not put Trump in jail
Your writer seems to believe that it is the vice president’s job to prosecute and jail Trump. Obviously it is not. To the extent the writer is really ignorant as to why a convicted felon is not in jail and his other pending cases have not come to trial, the answer is simple: Judges appointed by Trump are delaying and protecting him. From the Supreme Court’s despicable opinion granting Trump partial immunity to the federal district court judge who dismissed the case involving Trump’s indefensible refusal to return classified documents at the same time he was calling his friend Putin, it is Trump who does not want the cases to proceed and his judicial lackeys who are doing his bidding. If he was as innocent as he claims, why doesn’t he demand his speedy trial? What? No real answer to that question, is there?

Why I can’t vote for Harris
The Democrats are continually crying about how on earth could anyone vote for Donald Trump. Well, I will tell you why I cannot vote for Kamala Harris. Her administration:
1. Allowed an invasion at our borders with drugs, sex slavery, and thousands of lost children
2. Caused high inflation
3. Allowed skyrocketing crime and defunding of the police
4. Allowed appeasement of Antifa and Black Lives Matter
5. Allowed multitrillion-dollar deficit spending
6. Is warring on girls’ sports and parental rights
7. Is warring on the 1st and 2nd Amendments
8. Allowed two wars to start and is allowing Taiwan to be threatened
9. Took away our energy independence
10. Is allowing taxpayer funding of illegals
11. Sent millions of dollars to our enemy, Iran
12. Supports Medicare for all, including illegals
13. Is buying votes by spending $178 billion on student loan forgiveness, which the Supreme Court said is unconstitutional.
I have 10 more reasons on my list.

ake-Gallego debate
Thought this would have generated more interest. Apparently not! Never heard of Gallego until the campaign ads started. Thought he was a private citizen running for something. An ad revealed that he is a Congressman. But most of all I learned that he was a Marine. Some former Marines attested to that, others had questions. At the debate he again touted his Marine Corps experience along with recitation of his ads. I believe he would have more to offer if he would’ve made the Marine Corps a career. OORRAAHH! The position he encumbers does not seem to be his forte. Miss Kari, on the other hand, is a natural. Comfortable in her own skin and brings a wealth of skills, knowledge and abilities to the table. Requisite for the position they both covet. Exceptionally. Well demonstrated at the debate. She will definitely be an asset for Arizona. Vote!

Sadie Shaw for TUSD Board
At the League of Women Voters’ 8/30 TUSD Board Candidates’ Forum (view on YouTube), I asked this question: “What are your plans to provide equitable access to school libraries led by certified school librarians?” Sadie Shaw noted just 16 of 90 schools have state-certified school librarians and was specific about the impact of the 2014 cuts. Hers was the only response related to three decades of research correlating school libraries and certified librarians with student achievement in reading.
While only 28% of 3rd and 8th grade students test proficient in reading, two incumbents running for re-election continue to give lip service to the importance of libraries but fail to prioritize certified librarian positions in the budget.
As a former TUSD certified school librarian and retired librarian educator, I ask you to join me in casting your vote to return Sadie Shaw to the TUSD Board. She will continue to advocate for equitable research-based library staffing and funding for the literacy learning benefit of all TUSD students.

Open primaries, Prop 140
There seems to be some confusion about Proposition 140. If passed, it would permit qualified candidates to file for a position without party designation. The top two or three vote getters would then be on the final ballot. The most important effect of this would be to considerably weaken the status of fringe, partisan voters because any candidate would presumably have to have the support of a broad spectrum of voters to win. The current process of partisan primaries means that an extreme candidate has only to appeal to the fringes of his/her party to get on the ballot. That limits our choices to fringe candidates which produces the mess we have in Arizona.
The Democrats are urging us to vote against this proposition, but I think they are wrong. We need to support this change, reduce the impact of the extremists and give Arizona the rational, problem solving leadership we all desire.

Regarding â€Vote for health’ Op Ed 10/18
Dr. Peterson’s Op Ed, “Vote for Health ... ” struck home for me. As a physician I was well aware of the lung cancer risks with smoking but I was sadly dumbstruck 6 years ago when my non-smoking 59-year-old sister was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. It turns out that the rise of this type of lung cancer is highly correlated with air pollution and those air quality alerts. The very small 2.5PM particles responsible for the alerts are taken deeply into the lung and not only promote cancer risk and respiratory disease, they also are absorbed into the capillaries of the lung and increase the risk of heart disease. For our health and the climate, we need to look to creative solutions that safely transition our fossil fuel use to clean energy.
The current Arizona Corporation Commission has failed to address this issue. We need forward-thinking commissioners that take these risks seriously. Please vote for Ylenia Aguilar, Jonathon Hill and Joshua Polacheck.

May democracy live
Early voting has started, and Election Day is only a fortnight away. Based on how the GOP presidential candidate and his obedient troops on the down ballot have in public 1) lied about the 2020 election result even after more than 60 failed court cases and the violent insurrection on 6 January 2021, 2) tried to divide us by lies to dehumanize selected groups different from them, and 3) promised to suppress all who disagree with them even by military force and eliminate all future elections, I sincerely beg all fellow voters to vote for the love of America and what it stands for at home and abroad, by voting for all Democratic candidates, even if we don’t agree with them on every issue. Let’s keep our government of the people, by the people and for the people thriving in pursuit of a more perfect union.

Let’s talk about gaslighting
When someone lies to you, every day for eight years, it can make you question your own knowledge. It’s called gaslighting. Let’s tackle some things you hear a lot. This summer Trump said, “One hundred percent of the jobs created (under Biden/Harris) have gone to illegals.” The fact: the economy has added more than 15 million jobs since January 2021. Trump claims Biden/Harris cut US oil production. Another lie. American oil production is hitting record levels, just “Google” it. There are lots more examples. Think back to Trump’s claims on who would “pay for the wall.” And his plan to “repeal and replace Obamacare.” He has a concept now, but still no plan. Trump now calls Jan. 6 “a Day of Love.” I watched it on TV, and I bet you did too. Didn’t look like love to me.
Don’t fall for his lies — no matter how often he yells them.

Vote! And please remember
1) Be kind to everyone even if you don’t see eye to eye on issues.
2) Beware of the Republican/Big Business coalition that has been increasing the gap between “haves” and “have nots” since the ’80s. (executive pay increase vs worker pay increase)
3) Remember the start of Covid and Trump’s denial of any problem, now he’s much older, more confused and more dependent on others to help make decisions. Who? The authors of Project 2025, adios freedom.
4) Remember ’22 when the MAGA Republicans squabbled over two House Speakers. Don’t we want elected officials to negotiate and govern?
I’m tired of extremists being the tail that wagged the dog. At least the Democrats have their extremes under control, hopefully the Cheneys and like Republicans can win back their party. Vote!!

Survival 101
Food, water, and shelter, we cannot survive without them.
One massive storm, six states, hundreds dead, and thousands without food, water, and shelter remind us how quickly we can lose everything we need to survive and the importance of FEMA in providing life-saving aid.
To restore our climate and halt worsening climate disasters, we must accelerate our efforts to expand solar energy. Unlike fossil fuels that create up to 138 tons of carbon dioxide a year, solar produces zero emissions and lessens the effects of climate change.
Since power plants use trillions of gallons of water to cool their turbines, the more solar energy we produce, the more water we save to grow our food.
We must elect Kamala Harris to continue improving our climate and prevent Trump from worsening it by abolishing the EPA and FEMA.
And we must elect climate advocate Joshua Polacheck, scientist Jonathon Hill, and water expert Ylenia Aguilar to the Arizona Corporation Commission
Our lives depend on it.

MVD Removal of voters from mail voting
I am furious! I have been a registered voter for more than 50 years. I vote at every election and have voted by mail since it became available. After not receiving my ballot I contacted Pima County Recorders Office. Imagine my shock to find out that MVD removed my name from their list of mail voters. The evening TV news just announced that Governor Hobbs is launching an investigation into numerous cases like mine. I hope the culprits are caught and punished to the full extent of the law. This is Fascism!
