An arrest has been made in the 2024 Tucson shooting death that apparently started with an insult, authorities say.
John Lopez, 29, appeared in court Wednesday morning for an initial appearance on charges of second degree murder and possession of a weapon by a prohibited possessor in the Aug. 17 shooting of Aiden Lopes.
Here's what led to the fatal shooting, according to an interim complaint filed in Pima County Justice Court:
Aiden Lopes gave a man named Angel Gomez and his girlfriend a ride just prior to the shooting. During the ride, Lopes made a disparaging comment toward Gomez’s girlfriend.
Gomez relayed the situation to his friend, John Lopez, who invited the trio to stop by a home he was visiting near East Escalante and South Prudence roads. When they arrived, a brawl between Lopez and Lopes ensued, during which Lopes was shot. He died at the hospital on Aug. 22.

Cell phone data shows Lopez arriving at the residence about one hour prior to the brawl and leaving immediately after the shooting, the complaint says.
Police apprehended Lopez Feb. 25, and he was booked into the Pima County jail on suspicion of second-degree murder, being a prohibited possessor based on past convictions, court records show.
His bond is set at $1 million.
