Arizona couldn’t avoid the big inning. As a result, the Wildcats are headed home from Texas without a victory.
Louisville completed No. 21 Arizona’s winless weekend Sunday, defeating the Wildcats 13-1 on the final day of the Shriners Children’s College Showdown in Arlington, Texas.
The Cardinals scored eight runs in the fifth inning, all with two outs, and added five more in the eighth. On Saturday, No. 15 Clemson scored seven runs in the first inning and eight in the ninth in a 16-5 win over the UA.

Arizona went 3-0 in this tournament in Chip Hale’s debut season in 2022. The Wildcats now enter their home opener Tuesday afternoon vs. New Mexico seeking their first victory of the season.
Arizona last lost an opening-weekend series in 1994. They started 2-2 in 2016 and ’21 — the last two times the Wildcats reached the College World Series.

Arizona held a 1-0 lead entering the top of the fifth thanks to Mason White’s second home run of the season and brilliant pitching by freshman right-hander Smith Bailey.

Making his college debut, Bailey allowed three hits and struck out five in four scoreless innings. He threw 40 of 53 pitches for strikes and did not walk a batter.
But Bailey was on a pitch count, and the game changed when he exited. Louisville plated eight runs off transfer Michael Hilker Jr., a rally that began with White’s throwing error. His catch of a line drive secured the second out. After he sailed a throw to first into the dugout, Louisville strung together six consecutive hits. Nine straight batters reached base.
White’s home run was the 31st of his career, tied for 10th all-time in UA annals. That blast, in the bottom of the first inning, was the Wildcats’ lone hit.
After losing 2-1 in the season opener vs. Ole Miss, Arizona was outscored 29-6.
